Discover Virginia's Natural Beauty
From the shining coastal waters of the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay to the majestic Blue Ridge and Appalachian Mountains, Virginia is a state of extraordinary natural beauty that appeals to travelers as diverse as the state’s geography. The scenic Shenandoah Valley and Skyline Drive offer drivers and hikers an unforgettable array of colors from the breathtaking fall foliage to an abundance of wildflowers in Spring. Wildlife refuges in the 110,000 acre Great Dismal Swamp and hundreds of square miles of wild bird sancturies across the Chesapeake Bay on the Eastern Shore are wonderful examples of Virginia’s dedication to wildlife preservation.
A State of Contrasts
From glittering skyscrapers and world class shopping malls to meandering drives on tranquil country roads, there is something to do and so much to see every day in Virginia. It is a state of contrasts. In between the exciting cities, the roller coasters and modern beach resorts, there are more than 300 Revolutionary and Civil War battlefield sites, quaint 18th and 19th century towns and the historic homes of eight U.S. Presidents.
History
Virginia was colonized after the first permanent English
settlement at Jamestown in 1607 and named after Queen Elizabeth, the Virgin Queen of England. Roots of the American Revolution were established in Virginia and major battles of the Civil War were fought here. The state capital of Richmond was the capital of the Confederacy. Both wars ended here: the American Revolution at Yorktown in 1781, and the Civil War at Appomattox in 1865.
Add the romantic Shenadoah River and famous James River, abundant theatres, museums, plantations, caverns, festivals, top ranked golf courses and not forgetting one of the seven Natural Wonders of the World - Natural Bridge - Virginia is truly a wonderful state to visit and discover...
